Rust: 58 percent increase in the past 22 months

At the beginning of 2023, I was looking for a new job. Because I really wanted to work again on a Rust-related project and I was tired of reading outdated job posts I figured out a different way.

I obtained information about organization accounts from GitHub that had public repositories with Rust code. With some extra work, I compiled a list of companies that use Rust and have job posts on career pages. If someone is interested in these old results I published them in rs-companies repo.

Fast forward to 2025. Unfortunately, I need to look for new work again. So I redid the first part of information obtaining work and that led me to a nice discovery.

But let's establish a few details:

  • I'm not a data scientist.
  • Everyone may have an organization account on GitHub. It's not limited to companies or organizations.
  • Of course, my methodology is flawed. It's based on publicly available information. Only GitHub knows more about private repos and could provide definitive information.

Here is a list of the organization accounts I obtained in March 2023. It contains 33531 records.

Here is a list of the organization accounts I obtained in January 2025. It contains 53137 records.

It's a 58% growth over the past 22 months.

Taking into account that most of the companies don't publish the code of their software in a public repositories and some of them even host their own infrastructure because they don't want to risk code leaks, these numbers may show only a small part of the Rust adaptation growth. Data scientists who work in GitHub and other companies that provide git infrastructure could give a better number here.

Another source of information that could be used to estimate Rust usage is crates.io statistics. These statistics show a 300% downloads rate increase from March 2023 to January 2025.

Take everything I wrote here with a grain of salt. I encourage everyone who has a better methodology to publish their results.

I'll publish an updated list of companies with links to their career pages in the near future. I hope that this time with the growing Rust ecosystem it will be easier to find new Rust-related work.

Tools usage disclosure. I'm not a native English speaker. I use the following tools to improve my wording: Google Translate, Grammarly, and Hemingway Editor. These tools use artificial intelligence. I use them only to improve my writing, not to generate content.
